In The south of the Midi-Pyrenees, Ariege borders Spain and Andorra. Although more than 50% is mountainous, with 490,965ha. covered by forests it is predominantly a fertile farming area.
The Pyrenees form a backdrop to the entire department rising some 3,000m. along the border with Andorra and Spain. This is one of the least populated and most unspoilt parts of France with many old traditions especially farming techniques.
There are hundreds of miles of well marked paths in the mountains which are easily accessed by road, cable car or foot. Fresh water lakes provide a variety of activities including swimming, fishing, canoeing and sailboarding.
The Ariege also has several downhill ski resorts the largest three being Az-Bonascre, Les Monts d’Olmes and Guzet, as well as cross-country skiing resorts such as Plateau de Beille near Les Cabannes.
Foix is the main town, (population 9,109), with a medieval centre surrounded by two rivers and a huge rock with a fortress perched on a hill above the town.
Pamiers (population 13,417), offers a commercial centre and three fine churches, while Mirepoix, (population 3,061) is a beautiful medieval town. St.Girons has one of the best markets in south-west France, and St.Lizier, the ancient capital of the area, is a medieval hilltop town with winding streets, fine views and impressive cloisters in the church.
The Ariege is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
