The Gers is one of the least populated areas in France. Its culture is largely agricultural with emphasis on local gastronomic specialities predominantly foie gras and Armangac. Prominent crops include corn, rapeseed, grain and sunflowers.
Just west of Toulouse, Gers is less mountainous than other parts of the region featuring rolling hills with sleepy villages and hilltop bastides.
Auch (population 21,838) on the banks of the river Gers is the departmental capital. It has been an important crossroads since Roman times and has a beautiful cathedral construction of which started in 1489 and lasted two hundred years! The stained glass windows are magnificent as are the choir stalls decorated with over 1,500 figures the carving of which took 50 years.
In the North of the department Condom (population 7,251) is another riverside town with a fine cathedral, and heading south towards the Pyrenees the bastide town of Mirande has interesting but ruined ramparts and an unusual 15th century church with a Flemish style belfry.
The Gers is also remembered for Gersosi d’Artagnan, Alexandre Dumas’ fourth musketeer.
