Haute-Garonne is home to the regional capital Toulouse which with 437,000 inhabitants is France’s fourth largest city. Around half of the inhabitants of the Midi-Pyrenees live in Haute-Garonne the majority of who are in Toulouse. The south of the department is quite sparsely populated. The population density of Toulouse reaches 3,500 per square kilometre in some areas compared with an average of 54 for the Midi-Pyrenees as a whole.
Some 55% of the population of Toulouse is under the age of 40 and there are more students there than any other provincial town in France.
Despite its youthful present the city is steeped in history, with its famous pink bricks that emanate a spectacular glow at sunset, its narrow streets and its pretty fountain festooned squares. A visit to the Place de Capitole with its buzzing café society is a must.
Back to the present and the importance of the aerospace industry and the jobs and wealth it brings are indisputable. The birthplace of Concorde and Airbus make it arguably Europe’s main aeronautical centre.
That’s not the whole story though. The department stretches down south to Spain and is crossed by the upper course of the river Garonne for almost 200km., the borders of the department following the river. The extreme south is mountainous the highest point being the Pic de Perdiguere at 3,222m. There are four ski resorts, - Peyragudes, Luchon-Superbagneres, Le Mourtis and Bourg d’Oueil.
The historic capital of the area is St.Gaudens (population 11,529) situated in the Garonne valley. It is a pretty town with many castles and ancient churches in the surrounding area. Archaeologists have exhumed the oldest Gallo-Roman villa ever discovered in the area with evidence of human life going back 30,000 years.
