LOT

LotThe Lot in the north of the region is one of the most interesting and varied departments of the Midi-Pyrenees. It occupies part of the Park Regional des Causses, and the river Lot with its many tributaries has cut dramatic gorges into the dry limestone plateau. Elsewhere there are wide flat valleys covered in vineyards. The river Dordogne also flows through the department.

The capital Cahors (population 23,000), is a laidback town dating back to Roman times and boasts the spectacular Pont Valentre. A stunning feat of construction this 14th century bridge with six arches and three fortified towers is an emblem of the city and a world heritage site, as is St.-Etienne cathedral. The town is full of small atmospheric medieval streets and thirty secret gardens.

Lot: RocamadourRocamadour, one of the plus beaux villages of France must not be missed. This spectacular ancient town with its fortified towers and turrets seems to cling insect like to its steep cliff face position. Pilgrims making their way to Compostella used the town as a stop off point, while today visitors come from all over the world to see both this ancient religious town and the fantastic bird life nesting in the surrounding cliffs. The nearby caves (Gouffres) of Padirac offer guided tours by boat on the underground river.
Another plus beaux village is St.Cirq-Lapopie which hangs from a rock face 100 meters above a river. Boasting 13 historical monuments the village has narrow cobbled streets, Gothic facades and fortified doors.

In the north east of the department Gourdon (population 4,882) has gentle slopes leading down to the Dordogne River, many medieval buildings and close by a prehistoric art cave.
Figeac (population 9,606) a charming small medieval town to the East of the department, has houses dating from the 13th – 16th century when it was an important trade centre, and has a lively Saturday market.
The Cahors and Figeac areas are well known for their excellent wines.
Out door activities are numerous. From culture to nature there is something for everyone in the Lot.
