Tarn-et-Garonne the smallest department in the Midi-Pyrenees was created in 1808 by Napoleon 1 from territories belonging to neighbouring areas. In effect it has developed from part of Gascony and Languedoc creating a department which combines the best of these two cultures.
Deep forests and agricultural plains cover much of this fertile department and the three rivers that cross it, - the Tarn, Garonne and Aveyron, provide plenty of varied watersports.
The departmental capital Montauban (population 51,885) is the oldest bastide town in southern France. It suffered heavy damage during the Albigensian crusades but prospered under Catholic control. Most of the grand buildings there are from this period and today share the vibrancy of this lively and beautifully preserved environment.
Other towns to visit are Moissac (population 12,326) known for its abbey with its magnificently carved cloisters, and beneath the Roc d’Anglais cliffs on the Aveyron River, St. Antonin Noble Val. This attractive town is one of the area’s oldest settlements and makes a good base for exploring the local caves or canoeing on the river. There is a large busy market here every Sunday.
